Monthly Round-Up: March 2019

It’s been quite the month. But, as I write this, I have enjoyed a couple of days off and am actually thinking about gardening instead of working all the time. It’s heavenly. And maybe I’ll even read more books next month!

And, since it was Middle Grade March, it’s probably appropriate that my favorite was a middle grade book:

Smart, funny, and a whole lot of fun to read!

As for the rest:

Middle Grade:

Lost Rainforest: Mez’s Magic
Ben Braver and the Incredible Exploding Kid
Resistance
The Three Rules of Everyday Magic
Squint

Monthly Round-Up: February 2019

Oh, what a month. I swear I’ve worked more this month (even though I’m stepping down!) than I have in a LONG time. That said, I did get some reading done. Some.

My favorite this month (no surprise):

Fascinating, imminently readable and just really really good.

As for the rest…

Monthly Round-Up: January 2019

Okay, I hate January with a passion, but it kind of went fast. At least, fast-ish. Then again, I wasn’t deluged with frigid weather, and I watched the government shutdown from the sidelines. It definitely could have been worse.

I read a ton of good books this month, but this one surprised me with how much I enjoyed it:

It really was a delightful listen. As for the rest:

Middle Grade:

We’re Not From Here
Lety Out Loud

Monthly Round-Up: December 2018

It was a super-heavy YA and speculative fiction month, but that was to be expected (because of the Cybils), but even the adult books I read were speculative fiction. I’m probably a little burned out of spec fic for a bit…

No favorites this month, since the Cybils shortlists will be announced on Sunday, and I’m putting up my best-of lists tomorrow!

LifeL1k3
The Agony House
Beneath the Citadel
Blanca & Roja
Dread Nation
Not Even Bones
Mirage
The Wicked Deep
Bruja Born
A Curse So Dark and Lonely

The Boneless Mercies

Graphic Novels:

Non-Fiction:

The New Farm (audio)

Adult Fiction:

Friday Black

Monthly Round-Up: November, 2018

I think it’s been a very long time since a month has gone by and I have not read a SINGLE Middle Grade book. I don’t know if that’s going to get fixed next month (to be really honest, there isn’t a lot of middle grade out right now that I’m interested in reading!), but it really came as a bit of a surprise.

My favorite this month was rereading this (I joined Maggie Stiefvater’s read-along group):

Howl’s Moving Castle (link is to original review)

It really was as delightful this time around as it was the last time.  As for the rest:

Isle of Blood and Stone
Reign the Earth
What If It’s Us
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (audio)
A Winter’s Promise

Monthly Round-up: October 2018

Happy Halloween! Tonight will find me at home, deep in a Cybils book (hopefully) while answering the door (probably not; we don’t get many trick-or-treaters) and most likely setting a pumpkin on fire (don’t ask). It’s What One Does when there are only teenagers in the house.

I read a TON of really great books this month, but the one that’s stuck with me was this one:

heykiddo

Hey Kiddo

As for the rest:

Middle Grade:

Louisiana’s Way Home
Sweep

Allegedly
Give Me Some Truth (audio)

It’s the end of September (?!) and you know what that means? Tomorrow is Cybils Day! (That really should be a Thing.) Public nominations open up at midnight on Oct 1. And we need YOU to nominate. You can find out more information here.

My favorite this month:

I’m a sucker for a Jane Austen retelling and this one is both smart and modern and yet true to the spirit of the original. So very good.
