Monthly Round-Up: January 2019

Okay, I hate January with a passion, but it kind of went fast. At least, fast-ish. Then again, I wasn’t deluged with frigid weather, and I watched the government shutdown from the sidelines. It definitely could have been worse.

I read a ton of good books this month, but this one surprised me with how much I enjoyed it:

It really was a delightful listen. As for the rest:

Middle Grade:

We’re Not From Here
Lety Out Loud

On the Come Up
The Moon Within
The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy

Graphic Novel:

The Witch Boy
The Hidden Witch

New Kid

The Girls at 17 Swann Street

Monthly Round-Up: December 2018

It was a super-heavy YA and speculative fiction month, but that was to be expected (because of the Cybils), but even the adult books I read were speculative fiction. I’m probably a little burned out of spec fic for a bit…

The Agony House
Beneath the Citadel
Blanca & Roja
Dread Nation
Not Even Bones
The Wicked Deep
Bruja Born
A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Monthly Round-Up: November, 2018

I think it’s been a very long time since a month has gone by and I have not read a SINGLE Middle Grade book. I don’t know if that’s going to get fixed next month (to be really honest, there isn’t a lot of middle grade out right now that I’m interested in reading!), but it really came as a bit of a surprise.

My favorite this month was rereading this (I joined Maggie Stiefvater’s read-along group):

Howl’s Moving Castle (link is to original review)

It really was as delightful this time around as it was the last time.  As for the rest:

Monthly Round-up: October 2018

Happy Halloween! Tonight will find me at home, deep in a Cybils book (hopefully) while answering the door (probably not; we don’t get many trick-or-treaters) and most likely setting a pumpkin on fire (don’t ask). It’s What One Does when there are only teenagers in the house.

I read a TON of really great books this month, but the one that’s stuck with me was this one:

Hey Kiddo

As for the rest:

Middle Grade:

Louisiana’s Way Home

Young Adult:

Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish
Give Me Some Truth (audio)
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein
Dear Martin

Monthly Round-Up: September 2018

It’s the end of September (?!) and you know what that means? Tomorrow is Cybils Day! (That really should be a Thing.) Public nominations open up at midnight on Oct 1. And we need YOU to nominate. You can find out more information here.

My favorite this month:

I’m a sucker for a Jane Austen retelling and this one is both smart and modern and yet true to the spirit of the original. So very good.

Harbor Me

Young Adult:

Leah on the Offbeat (audio)
Ruin of Stars

Just another reminder: the applications for Cybils judges is open until September 9th! If you even have a (minimal) presence reviewing children’s books on the web (no matter the platform), then please apply! We’d love to have you, and you’ll love the experience. Promise.

On to the books!

Monthly Round-Up: July 2018

My reading skewed heavily on the YA and adult this month, which surprised me (I don’t really keep track of these things while I”m reading). I’m not sure I have a hands-down favorite this month, partially because it’s all bled into itself (between vacations and class) but if I had to pick one that surprised me how much I liked it, it would be this:

 Fulllmetal Alchemist

Really an interesting and good manga. As for the rest:

Middle Grade

Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective
The Secret of the Old Clock

The Bird and the Blade
