Notorious

So, I was at the library yesterday for our weekly storytime-and-book-checking outing. K and I picked out a handful of picture books, some DVDs for the girls, browsed for books for M (didn’t find any… I was in a rush and uninspired), and then got in line to check out. When I got to the counter, the librarian eyed me warily.

“Do you have any holds today?” she asked.

I chuckled, a bit nervously. “I honestly don’t know.”

She checked and sighed in relief: “Only one.” And off she went to get it.

I suppose word of my 20-hold pickups is getting around.

  1. That’s funny! I live in a small town, and our librarians all know me and my kids by name. I don’t even have to pull out a library card. When I show up they just go over to the rack and check to see how many holds are in. The downside of this is that they know exactly what I’m reading all of the time, so it could be embarassing if I decided to read something racy.

  2. I used to frequently have 100 items checked out of the library at a time. Luckily my library has no limit on the number of items (mine were mostly books)! We didn’t actually read all of the books, it’s just that I always put a selection in front of my kids knowing that they’d pick the best of the bunch out. I’d keep checking out a few books every week until I started to run into books that would not renew. Then I’d be forced to gather things up and return. Just a few days of inattention could run up some large fines though. It got to where I was spending as much as if I’d bought a book or two a month. I changed my habits. These days we manage with a lot less books because we read a lot more online and I have plenty of reading material for my business. Still, most of the librarians still know my family and appreciate that we love books. From a fellow Kansan, though I was late arriving.
