2008 Challenge #8: The Arthurian Challenge

For this challenge, I mostly deviated from my original list. I did read Mary Stewart’s triology — The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills and The Last Enchantment — and have to admit, that I still like them best. They really are classics.

As for the other three:
Sword of the Rightful King, by Jane Yolen
Grail Prince, by Nancy McKenzie
The Dragon’s Son, by Susan L. Thomson

I attempted The Acts of King Arthur and his Noble Knights, by John Steinbeck, and found that I’d rather read a novelization of the myth instead.

Thanks Becky for hosting this one!

  1. I suppose, having just finished the challenge, this is entirely the wrong time to point you in the direction of the works of Cretien de Troyes? When translated from the old French, they’re quite a good read, and certainly give one of the older takes on the legends. Really only the Welsh traditions are older, and de Troyes was the one responsible for making ‘literature’ of them.

  2. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Mary Stewart trilogy–I like the Arthurian legends, and will have to see if my library has these and give them a try.

  3. What a cool list of books. I love Mary Stewart’s Merlin books (there is a fourth called The Wicked Day which is not as good). I want to read the Yolen and McKenzie ones too.
