A Sure Sign it’s Spring

Is that it’s time for Carl’s Once Upon a Time Challenge again!

I had so much fun with this last year that I’ve been eagerly looking forward to participating again. I’m going to do Quest the Second, since I actually read Midsummer Night’s Dream last year and I think the Nook is learning toward a tragedy this year…

So, my list:

1. Fantasy: Swordspoint, by Ellen Kushner. (If I’m feeling ambitious, I may actually read the other two in the series… The Privilege of the Sword and The Fall of the Kings.)

2. Folklore: The Other Boleyn Girl, by Philippa Gregory. Again, like last year, it’s more historical fiction than folklore, but I’m going to pretend it’s not. 🙂

I bailed on The Other Boleyn Girl, and read American Gods by Neil Gaiman instead.

3. Fairy Tales: Into the Wild, by Sarah Beth Durst. Also for the Twisted Fairy Tales Challenge

4. Mythology: I’m going to re-read Mary Stewart’s Merlin Trilogy (The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment). I’ve wanted to do this ever since finishing Song of the Sparrow, and this is my golden opportunity. Bonus book: Rick Riordan’s Battle of the Labyrinth. It’ll be out in May, and M has promised me we’ll get it AS SOON AS IT COMES OUT. (No, she’s not excited.) I’m second in line for reading it anyway. 🙂

I’m really looking forward to this. So much fun!

  1. I’m not a huge basketball fan, but I do know people who are REALLY excited about KU’s chances. (I have to admit, I was more interested in KU’s football streak this fall, but that didn’t pan out. Maybe they’ll do better on the court….)

  3. I love it, too, Robin. It’s been years since I’ve read it, though, and I want to re-visit it. 🙂 Can’t wait. And Julie — I swear that if there’s a midnight release party, we’ll TOTALLY be there. At the very least, the moment the bookstore is open, we’re there to get it. (It’s May 6th. But we’re not counting the days. Yet.) And, dear daughter, it’s called sarcasm. 🙂

  4. Cool list! I’m not familiar with most of these, but the Merlin trilogy sounds really cool! I love anything to do with Merlin…always have ever since I was a kid. Look forward to your reviews 🙂

  5. I absolutely adored Ellen Kushner’s Thomas the Rhymer, and I’ve been meaning to read more of her work ever since I read it. I will be especially looking forward to your thoughts on Swordspoint.

  6. Chris — I can’t believe you haven’t read Mary Stewart’s Merlin Trilogy! (It’s a must read for all Merlin/King Arthur fans…) Go. Read. Now. 🙂 Nymeth — I’ve listened to Ellen Kushner on Sound and Spirit for years and I just found out (last year!) that she’s a writer… I’ve been meaning to get around to these ever since then. I’m glad I have an excuse. 🙂

  7. Melissa — thank you, you always open up new worlds to me! I know I shouldn’t sign up for a new challenge when I’m so way behind on Expanding Horizons, but I just couldn’t help it. I’d like to hear your comments on my list, if you have time to. Cheers!
