A Dilema

No, that’s not the title of a book.

I was in the library on Friday, looking for books to check out, and realized something. Everything on my “gotta read” list is either serious or long. Neither of which I was in the mood for on Friday. I wanted something light, fluffy, fun, funny, non-serious to read. And nothing sprang to mind. (Granted, we have a very limited library, so if there was something on my list, the libarary may not have had it anyway. But that’s beside the point.)

So, I figured that I needed to put a non-review up and see what happens. Maybe I can get some recommendations for books that I can read when I’m in a non-serious mood.

Either that, or I’ll just have to wait until my requests for Peter and the Starcatchers or Mrs. Kimble come in. Though I’m supposing the latter is both long and serious… sigh.

  2. Peter is funny and lightish. When I need an escape book, I read fantasy. I get impatient with funny books, I don’t know why. I suppose I need to lighten up. One of my recent reads, though, The Master Butcher’s Singing Club, was pretty funny.

  3. Have you read the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith? They are charming and entertaining, and also very moving & beautifully written. And they take place — vividly! — in Botswana, so they are a good escape. The Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich are trashier, but very funny and entertaining. Plus, they’re bestsellers so your library probably has ’em.

  4. Thanks for the suggestions. I read “Frog Princess” by , which took care of my need for something fluffy. But I’ll put the others on my list for the next time. You know, lb, I don’t like reading David Sedaris. He’s hilarious in person, or on the radio, but I just don’t get the same effect when I read him.Julie — I’ve heard a lot of good about the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency… I just need to check them out, now.

  5. I was in that exact same mood the other day, and so I picked up Bridget Jones’s Diary and it did the trick. Laugh out loud funny and a quick read too. Another fun novel is The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, as well as the subsequent novels in the series. They are longer, but a real treat for the literary minded.Found you via Bluestocking. Hello!
