I was in Spokane visiting my in-laws and I mentioned Julie’s post on Ballet Shoes. My mother-in-law happened to have a copy, and sent it home with me. I finally got around to reading it. It’s another one I missed out on as a kid (I missed out on a lot!), and even as an adult I found it kind of cute. It’s not really about ballet, I guess — only one of the three sisters ends up being a dancer — and I thought Noel Streatfeild kind of copped out in the end (nothing like a very pat “they all will live happily ever after” ending), but other than that, it was a lot of fun to read.
The “Shoe” series by Noel Streatfeild is one of my favorite kid lit series. It’s very English ,a bit dated, almost Victorian when it comes to her views on social class but charming none the less.

Heh heh, why am I not surprised to see a comment from Guusje when the topic is Noel Streatfeild???>>Melissa, I hope you can find a copy of Circus Shoes. As an adult re-read I liked it a lot, definitely better than Ballet Shoes. Ballet Shoes has huge sentimental value for me because I loved it so much as a kid. But Circus Shoes was really a better novel. Definitely a more sophisticated story, and I don’t completely agree with Guusje on the Victorian views.

That does give me an idea… maybe I’ll have my sister in law pick it up for me when we come up for Thanksgiving. Ah, the joys of living closer to family.
