Monthly Round-Up: January 2025

In which January was so long that I forgot today was the last day of it, and that I have a blog, and that I usually put up a Monthly Round-Up. *sigh* at least January is over.

I read more than this, but most of it was for Cybils, and the reviews for the ones I haven’t read will show up here next month.

I think this was my favorite this month, though it feels like a year since I listened to it:

The Honey Witch (audiobook)

Here are the ones I did write about:

Adult fiction

Back After This
The Broposal (audiobook)
Black Woods, Blue Sky

Non-Fiction

A Cook’s Tour

Monthly Round-Up: December 2024

Between the Christmas movies and activities and just the busy-ness of working retail at the holidays, I just didn’t get a lot read, and most of them were short. Oh well. Some months are just like that. I’m going to pick the only holiday book I managed to read this month as my favorite:

Let It Glow (audiobook)

As for the rest:

Adult Fiction:

Swordheart
Is She Really Going Out With Him? (audiobook)
Thornhedge

Graphic Novel

Fresh Start

Middle Grade

The Bletchley Riddle

Non-fiction:

Bone of the Bone (audiobook)

Up tomorrow: my year in review!

Monthly Round-Up: November 2024

It’s the end of another month – almost another year – and I’m finding it hard to fathom where this year has gone. Crazy to think that we’re almost a quarter of the way through the 21st century! (Oh, wow, that was a lot to fathom there.)

My favorite this month was the last one I read:

It was close though between that and The Listeners. Just read them both. As for the rest:

Young Adult:

Twenty-four Seconds From Now (audiobook)
Heist Royale (audiobook)

Adult:

Sourcery
Lost and Lassoed (audiobook)
The Listeners
The Teller of Small Fortunes

Middle Grade:

The Wildcat Behind Glass

Graphic Novels:

Speak Up, Santiago
Sword of the Champion
Dear Dad

What was your favorite this month?

Monthly Round-up: October 2024

It’s been a pretty crazy month. I’d blame Mercury in retrograde, but I don’t think that’s the reason. It just feels very much like everything, everywhere all at once. That said, I finished a lot of really excellent books this month. My favorite, though, was this one:

Tucci is an excellent food writer. I hope he does more.

As for the rest:

Middle Grade:

The Sherlock Society (audiobook)
The Hotel Balzaar (audiobook)
The Pumpkin Princess and the Forever Night
Grow up Luchy Zapata

Adult Fiction:

The Bones Beneath My Skin
The Ex Hex
We Solved Murders (audiobook)

Non-Fiction:

Field Notes for the Wilderness

What was your favorite this month?

Monthly Round-Up: September 2024

A couple of thoughts: 1) did September just fly by for everyone else, too? I swear the last time I checked it was the end of August. 2) I love romance books, they’re fun and enjoyable, but after a month of reading nothing but romance and children’s books, I need something with a little more heft to it. More non-fiction next month.

My favorite happened to be one I read at the end of August but didn’t blog about until this month:

I still think about this one. There’s a strong possibility it will end up on my favorites this year. I just adored it.

As for the rest:

Middle Grade:

Buffalo Dreamer (audiobook)
The Cookie Crumbles
The Night War
Magnolia Wu Unfolds it All
On a Wing and a Tear

Adult Fiction:

Done and Dusted (audiobook)
Four Weekends and a Funeral
The Truth According to Ember (audiobook)
The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year
Assistant to the Villain (audiobook)
Roland Rogers Isn’t Dead Yet
Swift and Saddled
Apprentice to the Villain (audiobook)

Non-Fiction:

The Bookshop (audiobook)

What was your favorite this month?

Monthly Round-Up: August 2024

Where did August go? How is it already September? What has happened? I have no idea how we got here…

That said, I did have an absolute favorite this month:

I love T. Kingfisher, and will read practically anything she writes (except for her horror, though I have been tempted). It’s such a good story. (We did a blind date with a book for August, and my blurb for this one was “Old Ladies being absolute badasses” and it sold quite a few. So. good.)

YA:

The Prisoner’s Throne
Ultraviolet
Arya Khanna’s Bollywood Moment (audiobook)

Graphic Novel:

The Deep Dark

Adult Fiction:

The Faculty Lounge (audiobook)
I’ll Have What He’s Having
The Seventh Veil of Salome (audiobook)
The Bloodless Princes

Middle Grade:

Drawing Deena
The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman

Non-Fiction

The Serviceberry

What was your favorite this month?

Monthly Round-Up: May 2024

May was a weird month; there were two whole weeks in the middle that I didn’t read a single book, which is really unusual for me. I did have a favorite:

It’s everything a Middle Grade book should be. And, with that, here’s the books I DID read this month:

Adult Fiction:

Happy Medium (audiobook)
Sunbringer
Lies & Weddings (audiobook)

Graphic Novels

Plain Jane and the Mermaid
Amulet: Waverider

Middle Grade

Across So Many Seas
Bridge to Bat City

Monthly Round-Up: April 2024

I find it interesting how much my co-workers influence my reading. When I had a friend who was super into YA and romance novels, I read a lot of those (still do, though; I like them!), but now that she’s left, and there’s a huge fantasy/sci-fi contingent at work, I find myself being pulled into that. (Alas, that poor literary fiction readers. And we’re still lacking someone to read books in the history section …) All this to say 1) I haven’t read a YA book in AGES, 2)’m out here being the lone middle grade reader at work, and 3) I read a lot of fantasy. So it’s not surprise that this is my favorite this month:

I am thoroughly enjoying Emily Wilde’s adventures! As for the rest:

Non-Fiction:

Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson’s Creek (audiobook)
The Mango Tree (audiobook)

Middle Grade:

Finally Heard
Just Shy of Ordinary
City Girls

Adult Fiction:

The Fireborne Blade
Novel Love Story

What was your favorite this month?

Monthly Round-Up: March 2024

Happy Easter and Happy Trans Day of Visibility! I hope it’s a wonderful day whatever you choose to celebrate.

My favorite this month:

Are you surprised? I’m excited for everyone to be able to experience it.

As for the rest:

Adult fiction

The Guncle Abroad
Rainbow Black (audiobook)
The Spellshop
Happily Never Ater (audiobook)

Non-fiction:

All Boys Aren’t Blue (audiobook)
American Zion

Graphic Novels:

Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen: vol 1
Amulet: The Cloud Searchers (reread)

Finding Hope (Audiobook)

What did you like this month?

Monthly Round-Up: February, 2024

February went so fast, that the end of it completely snuck up on me. And there’s even one more day this year!

My favorite was the last one I read:

It’s just so engaging, and a lot of fun to listen to!

Graphic Novel:

Lunar New Year, Love Story
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Amulet: The Stonekeeper (reread)

YA:

Chaos Theory (audio book)

Middle Grade:

Tagging Freedom

Adult Fiction:

The Rule Book
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries
